Searching for a digital marketing company near me is one thing. Actually hiring the right one is another.
This checklist is built for founders and business owners who are ready to make a decision — and want to make sure they’ve covered the bases before signing a contract. Use it as a conversation guide in final-stage agency meetings, or as a structured self-assessment of any proposal you’ve received.
PRE-SEARCH: GET CLEAR ON WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED
Before you evaluate a single digital marketing company, answer these questions internally:
- What is the primary business problem I’m trying to solve?
- What does success look like in 6 months? In 12 months?
- What channels am I currently investing in, and what’s working or not working?
- What is my realistic budget for marketing — both agency fees and media spend?
- What does my internal marketing team look like, and what support do I need from an agency?
- Do I need a full-service agency or a specialist in one or two channels?
THE HIRING CHECKLIST
SECTION 1: CREDENTIALS AND CREDIBILITY
- Can they provide case studies from businesses comparable to mine in industry, size, or market?
- Do their case studies show specific, documented results — not just nice-looking creative work?
- Are they certified or have demonstrated expertise in the specific channels I need?
- Do they have verifiable client reviews on third-party platforms?
- Have I actually called provided references and asked substantive questions?
SECTION 2: STRATEGIC FIT
- Did they ask more questions about my business than they talked about themselves in our initial conversation?
- Can they explain how they would approach my specific marketing challenge?
- Do they understand my market, my buyers, and my competitive landscape specifically?
- Is their strategic philosophy aligned with how I think about growth and brand?
- Did they identify challenges or constraints in our initial conversations, or did everything sound too easy?
SECTION 3: TEAM AND EXECUTION
- Do I know exactly who will be on my account — not just who is selling me?
- What is the experience level of the day-to-day team members?
- How will communication happen — dedicated Slack channel, weekly calls, project management software?
- Who is my primary point of contact, and what authority do they have to make decisions?
SECTION 4: REPORTING AND ACCOUNTABILITY
- Have they shown me what their standard reporting looks like?
- Does their reporting connect channel activity to business outcomes, not just platform metrics?
- What KPIs will we agree on before the engagement starts?
- What happens if results are below expectations — what’s their process?
SECTION 5: CONTRACT AND COMMERCIAL TERMS
- Is the contract term appropriate for the scope of work?
- Is there a clear scope of work in the contract, not just broad service descriptions?
- Do I understand what I own at the end of the engagement?
- Is pricing transparent and does it separate agency fees from media spend?
SECTION 6: CULTURE AND PARTNERSHIP FIT
- Do I genuinely trust the people I’ll be working with?
- Did they push back on anything I said in a way that felt constructive?
- Does their work — their website, content, social presence — demonstrate the quality they’re promising for me?
GREEN FLAGS AND RED FLAGS
GREEN FLAGS: They told you something about your situation you didn’t already know. Their proposal is specific to your business. They’ve worked with businesses like yours and can show results. They’re honest about timelines and risks. Senior people are involved in strategy, not just in selling.
RED FLAGS: They guarantee specific rankings or results. Their reporting is all vanity metrics with no revenue connection. They can’t name who specifically will work on your account. Their proposal looks like it could have been written for any company. They’re the cheapest option by a significant margin.
